Our pioneering Old Mutual volunteer, Lilly

Linz | 30 October 14

For my volunteering day I wanted to do something outdoors and came across Bankside and Open Spaces Trust which help to improve and maintain parks and community gardens around Waterloo and London Bridge.

I met up with Mary at Southwark Cathedral and with the help of a couple of US students (as per photo) and 4 ladies (from Estonia), we got stuck in, quite literally in a few bushes – clearing out branches, leaves, trimming and general tidy-up.

It got very muddy and at times painful with a few of the prickly plants we came across! Once we had bagged up the debris, we then carried sandbags around to fill out the cracks in between the pavement slabs to stop weeds from growing and swept it all in by the front of the cathedral.

It was pretty hard work but rewarding once we finished the task and looked back at the results. I really enjoyed my time, felt good to give up my work day to improve a part of London’s green space and I had a good workout.
