Who will I help?

Are you one of the many thousands of Londoners who live in a built up area without a garden? If so the next best thing is community space to kick a ball, grow veg or soak up some Vitamin D.

That’s what Bankside Open Open Space does. They work with local residents by the Thames to ensure it’s 12 green spaces are meaningful for all.

By relying on local people for help, BOST brings communities together with a shared purpose and a place to spend time together.

How will I help?

Volunteer at BOST and get active in one of two of BOST’s beautiful open spaces – Red Cross Garden on Monday, Christ Church Garden on Tuesday or Waterloo Millennium Green on a Wednesday.

You may find yourself helping out with:

• Weeding and planting
• Pruning shrubs and clearing away
• Preparing flower beds

You will be working alongside BOST regular volunteers, undertaking physical tasks that will make a real difference to these greatly valued gardens.

I had a wonderful time volunteering at the Backside open spaces trust. It was a great opportunity to acquire some gardening experience. It was also very nice to spend one entire day completely outdoors and interacting with all kinds of people as 3 homeless people also joined us to volunteer and help out cleaning one of the gardens.

I felt very welcome and useful and would recommend it around me.

BOST helps in so many of the beautiful parks and gardens around London, it is really nice to spend a day outside and help them maintain this.

I volunteered for half a day with my colleague in the Red Cross Garden. We were given our own little project to work on which was great as we felt a real sense of achievement working through it. We were lucky with the weather, but there were jobs to do under cover had it been a bit rainy. There was a diverse and passionate group of volunteers from all walks of life, and it was great to see everyone getting stuck in!

I volunteered for Bankside Open Spaces and spent the whole morning/lunch time clearing up the grounds of Southwark Cathedral. We worked well as a team and worked really hard to improve. It felt rewarding being able to help out the community.

I worked with Bankside Open Spaces Trust (BOST) on the morning of 18th September, in the gardens around Southwark Cathedral. It was a real sense of achievement at the end of 3 hours to see the impact our work had; as we were leaving a number of people came to sit in the area just outside the entrance to the Cathedral and commented on the work we had been doing that they could now enjoy. Since then, I have joined the BOST, Twitter and Facebook pages and plan on volunteering again in my own time – it’s a great way to unwind and to enjoy the outdoors, great British weather permitting!

Someone came by to give an overview of the charity and the type of work that they do which I appreciated and enjoyed. It was helpful to understand how my one day of volunteering fit into their overall mission and scope of work, which made the experience more meaningful and less random.

There was a nice amount of work but still plenty of time to chat – a nice balance between being underutilized and run off my feet! Would definitely volunteer again.

I thoroughly enjoyed the day – the people at Bankside Open Spaces Trust couldn’t have been more welcoming! There were lots of jobs to be getting on with which helped maintain an obviously important green space in the community. Everything was well organised and there were always jobs to be getting on with, including cutting back plants and digging. A lovely way to spend a day out of the office.

We enjoyed our day at Bankside Open Spaces Trust. The staff were really welcoming, appreciative and helpful. Staff repeatedly mentioned how much the on going support from Accenture and Benefacto is appreciated. Great to spend the day doing something different from our day jobs!

    :

It was great being able to spend a day outside and help turn a piece of land in central London into somewhere where people can spend some time relaxing and enjoying the garden. Bit hit and miss with the amount of work you are able to do depending on how far along the garden is/ when it was last worked on.

The day was spent pruning roses, shaping hedges and other shrubs at two sites, all within a couple of minutes walking distance. The weather was perfect and it was an enjoyable day. You do not have to be experienced in gardening at all, as you are shown how to do the tasks and the staff are also working alongside you so can ask them anything if you are unsure.

There are a number of small open spaces around the London Bridge area, some of which you would not even know about. I would have stayed for much longer as there was a lot of work to do, which I thoroughly enjoyed. The weather was great which was a bonus. I would be very happy to volunteer at BOST again.
