Glass Door Chelsea
Support the homeless day centre by preparing and serving lunch in Chelsea
Who will I help?
Situated in one of London’s most affluent areas, people are often shocked to hear there are homeless people in Chelsea.
Glassdoor Chelsea run an all year round daytime service to relieve poverty amongst homeless people, providing them with a warm lunchtime meal, clothing, washing facilities as well as health checkups and practical support solutions to help end homelessness
During the winter, they run the largest night shelter with up to 100 bed spaces each night, helping to keep vulnerable people out of the cold and off the streets.
How will I help?
Volunteering at Glass Door will give you the opportunity to give meaningful support to homeless people.
You may find yourself helping out with:
• Helping to prepare lunch, serving clients and washing up
• Registering guests attending the centre
• Sorting items in the clothes store
A highly rewarding experience in a friendly environment that offers you an insight into the problems homeless people face, and how resourceful they have to be.
What Can I Expect
Volunteering at homelessness charities can be as challenging as it is rewarding. They provide services to some of the people who are most at need in our society including those suffering from addiction, mental health issues and the results of long periods of destitution. As a result you may witness people exhibiting threatening behaviour or being verbally abusive – although this certainly doesn’t go for everyone you will be working with. You’ll be briefed on arrival on how to deal with difficult circumstances and given guidance on how to raise any concerns. However, you should never be asked to work on your your own with service users.
