Who will I help?

Learning how to put a meal together is part of the battle of learning to live alone for many older men when they lose their wives. This friendly cooking club helps them do just that, and make friends along the way.

With the help of young professionals volunteering from the local community, the would-be Masterchefs go from learning how to chop an onion to making curries, tagines and pies.

The club also helps tackle generational barriers and the problem of loneliness.

How will I help?

Volunteer at North London Cares Cooking Club to share your prowess in the kitchen with people who will really appreciate your help.

You may find yourself:

• Assisting clients in all stages of putting a meal together
• Showing them how to keep work areas clean
• Sitting down and enjoying lunch with them

A fun and relaxed environment where you’ll be able to pass on useful skills and help combat loneliness at the same time.

I had a really enjoyable time yesterday and think it’s a great way to get the elderly out and socialising. I think there can be some improvements made to make full use of the time that the men are there – whilst the food is cooking, there isn’t much for them to do other than talk among themselves or with the volunteers, but the quieter gentlemen don’t really speak unless spoken to. A card game/dominos or something could be introduced as a way utilising the time whilst their meal is cooking.

The day was really good, so relaxed and informal. Our host, Rosie, was brilliant, I was amazed at her passion.
