Kate Faragher: Our pioneering volunteer from Baringa

Linz Darlington | 22 April 15

Why did you pick Acton Homeless Concern?

Looking around its clear to see homelessness is on the increase, statistics have put the rise at over 50% since 2010. Having somewhere to go daily for a hot meal where people know you by name is extremely important. Volunteering doesn’t require any skills, a smile and hello goes a long way.

“It was easy to book and there were a variety of different options to choose from.”

Was the opportunity what you were expecting?

Yes in terms of what I would be doing; prepping the lunch, serving the clients, washing up. But the food being produced from the donations was pretty depressing. Mainly tinned soups bulked out with cous-cous and frozen cheap burgers. Perhaps I was there on a bad day.

Have you volunteered before?

I’ve previously only volunteered via corporate group activities, it was nice to get out of the office and talk to the other volunteers, many who help regularly.

What did you learn?

I learnt that a lot of people use these homeless centres, some aren’t homeless but are struggling to afford food. They’re vital. I’d like to do more to help with regular donations of more nutritious food.

What was the best bit about volunteering?

I felt helpful, the centre sometimes has lots of volunteers, sometimes only a few.

Linz Darlington was inspired to start Benefacto when he worked as a management consultant for Accenture. With three paid days off a year to spend volunteering, he had a tough time choosing a local charity where his skills could make a real impact. These days he spends his life matching talented professionals with amazing charities. Contact Linz via
