"One of the most emotional days I’ve experienced and I'm grateful for being given the opportunity to work with these wonderful people," Fraz Khan

Who will I help?

A hot shower, clean clothes, and a warm place to sit – all these are things you don’t have when you are homeless.

Acton Homeless Concern is a beacon of hope to the 150 vulnerable people who use it every day, offering nutritious meals and a friendly smile as well as other services including chiropody and counseling.

Founded in 1989, the charity has two centres and depends entirely on donations and the help of volunteers to run its services.

How will I help?

Volunteer at Acton Homeless Concern and you will gain first-hand experience of delivering essential services to people with nowhere to live.

You may find yourself helping out with:

• Preparing and cooking lunch
• Interacting with clients, serving food and clearing tables
• Sorting donations of clothing, household goods and toys

Your willingness to spend time with clients and help regular volunteers with a variety of tasks will be greatly appreciated.

What Can I Expect

Volunteering at homelessness charities can be as challenging as it is rewarding. They provide services to some of the people who are most at need in our society including those suffering from addiction, mental health issues and the results of long periods of destitution. As a result you may witness people exhibiting threatening behaviour or being verbally abusive – although this certainly doesn’t go for everyone you will be working with. You’ll be briefed on arrival on how to deal with difficult circumstances and given guidance on how to raise any concerns. However, you should never be asked to work on your your own with service users.

This was one of the most emotional and challenging days I’ve experienced this year and I am grateful for being given the opportunity to work with these wonderful people. It’s a perspective on life that you can’t learn while working in a large sheltered corporate and it’s days like this that help ground us as individuals.

The people who work at the shelter were extremely nice, hardworking and passionate about their work; they’re a true team who are passionate about the work they do and really care about the people who come to the shelter. They were very inspiring; many volunteer on a regular basis in their own time, and come from far and near to help those less fortunate; they also organise a doctor, solicitor to help with housing and even a hairdresser on a regular basis. It was a real eye opener and humbling experience to spend the day helping those less fortunate, hear some of their stories and help in some way. I am definitely keen to get involved and help again in the future; they are providing an excellent service to the local community.

It was a great day working with some really inspiring individuals who clearly care about what they do and the community around them.
The centre was run very efficiently, catering for an array of needs all under one roof and I really admire the dedication of the regular volunteers there.

Really valued the opportunity to take part & volunteer with some an exceptional charity. To see first hand the astounding work done by Acton Homeless and I felt my time was well used here. Would definitely recommend, Benefacto makes it so much easier to volunteer.

The staff and volunteers made my colleague and me feel very welcome. They do fantastic work for the local homeless folk. So much more than just provide meals and drinks. The extensive range of services was an eye-opener and it’s all done with good grace, humour and empathy. There was always something to do, so we were kept busy. During our visit we did chat with the team who were pleased to tell us about the Centre and its work. With that in mind I wonder if a brief induction would be useful for new volunteers when they arrive? Just so that they have an idea of what’s expected of them and can hit the ground running when the Centre opens its doors.

The Centre opened at 09.00, prior to which breakfast was being prepared. So when my colleague and I arrived just before 09.00 we had time for some cursory greetings and straight to work. Perhaps an arrival time of 08.30 for new volunteers would give sufficient time for an overview of the Centre, its work and meet the team.

We came away feeling we had done something useful with our time and full of praise for the team at Acton Homeless. They’re brilliant.

    Thanks for the opportunity.

It was definitely worth while volunteering at Acton Homeless Concern. The work that is put in by the regular volunteers is amazing and it was a bit of an eye opening experience to see the number of people who need this kind of help. If you get a chance to help someone, I would definitely recommend it!

It gave me wonderful insight into the amazing work this charity, and no doubt others similar, do in the community. The fact that our help was so appreciated has inspired me to regularly volunteer for other similar charities – even if you can only do this once a month, it really makes a difference.

The experience was quite physically challenging, which would have been useful to know in advance. However, it is a very worthwhile cause and we did feel we made a difference, although the majority of our time was spent washing dishes – no doubt a useful activity, however, spending a bit more time actually serving dishes and talking to people would probably have made us feel more ‘connected’/involved.

Amazing experience, staff and volunteers I met are true inspiration. Great team work, facilities fantastically well kept in every sense of the word and they put a smile on everyone’s faces especially the “clients” that came for lunch. I am planning to keep on doing this, just fantastic!! THANK YOU and keep it up.

    Had a great experience.
The team at the Acton homeless concern work very hard and are very passionate with what they do. They really have a personal touch with all the homeless people that come through the door, and by working as a strong unit, they make sure the day goes like clockwork. I highly recommend this charity.

Great people and staff. Pretty non-stop but a bit of hard work for half-a-day shows how much effort goes into feeding the needy.

I was not sure what to expect really however upon arrival, I was put straight to work and felt like I really made a difference. It was life changing for me personally, unfortunately never having done anything like that before. The team were amazing and I made every minute I had there count. I would strongly recommend this to anyone, if not only to appreciate the small things people may take for granted. Thank you for the experience and thank you for having me.
