Prepare and serve lunch to homeless people in Acton
"One of the most emotional days I’ve experienced and I'm grateful for being given the opportunity to work with these wonderful people," Fraz Khan
Who will I help?
A hot shower, clean clothes, and a warm place to sit – all these are things you don’t have when you are homeless.
Acton Homeless Concern is a beacon of hope to the 150 vulnerable people who use it every day, offering nutritious meals and a friendly smile as well as other services including chiropody and counseling.
Founded in 1989, the charity has two centres and depends entirely on donations and the help of volunteers to run its services.
How will I help?
Volunteer at Acton Homeless Concern and you will gain first-hand experience of delivering essential services to people with nowhere to live.
You may find yourself helping out with:
• Preparing and cooking lunch
• Interacting with clients, serving food and clearing tables
• Sorting donations of clothing, household goods and toys
Your willingness to spend time with clients and help regular volunteers with a variety of tasks will be greatly appreciated.
What Can I Expect
Volunteering at homelessness charities can be as challenging as it is rewarding. They provide services to some of the people who are most at need in our society including those suffering from addiction, mental health issues and the results of long periods of destitution. As a result you may witness people exhibiting threatening behaviour or being verbally abusive – although this certainly doesn’t go for everyone you will be working with. You’ll be briefed on arrival on how to deal with difficult circumstances and given guidance on how to raise any concerns. However, you should never be asked to work on your your own with service users.
