Who will I help?

Situated in one of London’s most affluent areas, people are often shocked to hear there are homeless people in Chelsea.

Glassdoor Chelsea run an all year round daytime service to relieve poverty amongst homeless people, providing them with a warm lunchtime meal, clothing, washing facilities as well as health checkups and practical support solutions to help end homelessness

During the winter, they run the largest night shelter with up to 100 bed spaces each night, helping to keep vulnerable people out of the cold and off the streets.

How will I help?

Volunteering at Glass Door will give you the opportunity to give meaningful support to homeless people.

You may find yourself helping out with:

• Helping to prepare lunch, serving clients and washing up
• Registering guests attending the centre
• Sorting items in the clothes store

A highly rewarding experience in a friendly environment that offers you an insight into the problems homeless people face, and how resourceful they have to be.

What Can I Expect

Volunteering at homelessness charities can be as challenging as it is rewarding. They provide services to some of the people who are most at need in our society including those suffering from addiction, mental health issues and the results of long periods of destitution. As a result you may witness people exhibiting threatening behaviour or being verbally abusive – although this certainly doesn’t go for everyone you will be working with. You’ll be briefed on arrival on how to deal with difficult circumstances and given guidance on how to raise any concerns. However, you should never be asked to work on your your own with service users.

Wonderful team to work alongside, as a woman, I felt comfortable and looked after. I thoroughly enjoyed the day and would happily return to West London Homeless Concern to volunteer again.

The charity was actually a Shelter on Kings Road in London, but it was great to help out at the time. The experience was very satisfying and rewarding and if I were to get the time, I would consider this opportunity again.

This is a really great charity and the help i provided was really appreciated. The church helps to feed 100 homeless people everyday and it is a really great, congregation-funded charity. I would highly recommend this opportunity.

The charity made us feel very welcome and were keen to talk us properly through our tasks. The volunteers/staff there are so friendly and we really enjoyed our day helping out. We would both definitely go back to help again.

Very nice team, we were two Benefacto volunteers, and were very well welcome!
I was able to really help the team for the homeless people (food preparation and distribution) and to speak with lots of guests in a friendly climate.

I had a great day. The team were all so friendly, welcoming and were great fun to work with. I helped in the office with the postal system, in clothes store and in the kitchen preparing and serving lunch. I would definitely recommend this volunteering opportunity and will be returning myself to help out and see everyone again.

I had a great day. The team were all so friendly, welcoming and great fun to work with.
I helped in the kitchen with serving breakfast and keeping the area clean. We also went up to the main kitchen to start preparing for the lunch time meal.
I would definitely recommend this volunteering opportunity and will be returning myself to help out and see everyone again.

I would like to say a big thank you to the Methodist Church to be able to do this charity work for many people living on the streets, this can be the difference
between being able to get proper meal, clothes wash and advise on how to go for jobs and lifting themselves out of poverty.

What a great experience for this great charity. I spent time chatting with the various people at Glass Door, joined in making lunch and generally helping out. The staff were fantastic and overall a great expereince. I’m just about to book another day here at the end of November 2016.

Glass Door Chelsea was a great place to spend a day helping out. Steve and the rest of the team of staff and volunteers made me feel very welcome. I was busy all day – helping to prepare lunch for the homeless clients, serve coffee and tea, serve lunch and help with cleanup. It was also an eye opening experience as to the level of need right here in London. Would highly recommend it.

I found the experience rewarding and would certainly consider volunteering at Glassdoor or another charity in the future.

It would be preferable to me personally if there were opportunities to volunteer for charities in Enfield as this is where I live.

I had a good day volunteering, and would definitely recommend it and i would do it again. It puts so many things into perspective for those who are less fortunate than ourselves.

The charity is wonderful with some amazing staff who I was completely in awe of. I met and chatted to some lovely people with very inspiring stories and left feeling very humbled by the experience.

The team running the homeless centre made me feel welcome and were supportive.
The joining instructions could be clearer (e.g. doors open at 9, come in and look for office on ground floor). I had a phone number but could not get anybody (although they did try and call me back).
