Who will I help?

3.5 million older people in the UK say TV is their main form of company. Shocking, isn’t it?

Day Centres like Sotheby Mews tackle loneliness and isolation by giving older people a reason to leave the house. Sotheby Mews provides a hot meal, a round or two of Bingo and a good natter with friends.

And when any (and I mean any!) special occasion comes around – Christmas, Valentines Day, Harvest – Sotheby Mews will be celebrating in style. And why ever not!?!

How will I help?

Volunteering at Sotheby Mews will help to reduce loneliness and bring a smile to the faces of older people at the weekly lunch club.

You may find yourself helping out:

• Preparing serving and clearing away lunch
• Supporting staff in a wide range of activities
• Engaging in conversation with members

You’re bound to leave having had a good laugh and an enjoyable afternoon with older people.

Fantastic opportunity supporting a Christmas Party for over 70 older people in the Highbury community alongside some of the charity volunteers who do such a fantastic job week in week out. It was a privilege to support their work for a day and I found it very rewarding! Thanks to Benefacto for organising this for me and 2 other work colleagues, seamlessly organised – very professional and the day was a big success for both us as volunteers and the charity. Huge Thanks! I would love to support again!

It was great, i really felt needed and was glad i could help out for the day. It’s a place where you can give a lot even by just being there and talking to the elder people because some of them are very lonely. It was very fulfilling and i’d love to do it again. That’s how i want to use my charity days.

I had a most enjoyable day at Sotheby Mews with both the staff and visitors to the centre making me feel most welcome. There was lots to do ranging from helping with teas, coffees and lunch to sitting and chatting to the visitors there. A very worthwhile charity and I certainly plan to return again.

I went to Sotheby Mews for my first day of charity work and was delighted to be able to chat and help out with the staff. Most importantly to chat to the people that visit – it was most enjoyable talking with them and then to share a lunch made by the staff and sit down and interact.

I helped with tea rounds and then the lunch and bingo, the main thing was talking to the ladies and men that are there, they are all so nice and I can’t wait to go back again. I have booked another day with a colleague in October. I made them a cake and will be brining something nice the next visit too.

I really enjoyed volunteering here. The elderly people seemed to appreciate seeing fresh faces. I helped fulfil the daily activities at the centre – two tea runs, serving teas, coffees and biscuits to the visitors, helping with lunch and even calling the numbers in Bingo. The most enjoyable part of the day and the bulk of my time was spent simply chatting with the wonderful elderly visitors.

Helping the elderly clients of the centre with their teas and coffees and watching them go about their activities with an energy I wouldn’t have thought they had was an uplifting experience.

Have volunteered here now 3 times and the last time was their Christmas lunch and it was very rewarding – plus we got lunch!

I had a great time during my day at the Sotheby Mews Day Center. Nigel was very welcoming and friendly throughout the day, and I felt I had clear duties to do so the time flew by! I also really enjoyed getting the chance to sit and speak with the clients. They were lovely and some had great stories to tell. I would volunteer at Sotheby Mews again!
